Short-Rotation Coppice Managed According to Ecological Guidelines—What Are the Benefits for Phytodiversity?

چکیده

In recent years, the impact of short-rotation coppice (SRC) on biodiversity has been a regular subject research and ecological guidelines have developed to make biomass cultivation SRC more compatible with concerns. However, since these are only implemented voluntarily by farmers, there barely any that managed according guidelines. Consequently, knowledge about their importance for farmland different measures increasing remains scarce. Therefore, three experimental SRC, which thus include stands tree species (varieties poplar (Populus) willow (Salix), rowan (Sorbus aucuparia), silver birch (Betula pendula)) growth-stages within same site, were investigated regard as habitat vascular plants. Species numbers composition compared following types: afforestations (AFO), young (HE-Y) old hedges (HE-O), field margins (FM) arable land (AL). Furthermore, stand types (i.e., growth-stages, headlands, clearings) surveyed compared. similar HE-Y, AFO FM significantly higher than in AL HE-O. The plant communities differed considerably from other habitats, especially AL, HE-O FM. Within most had numbers. Only non-harvested particularly species-poor. Harvesting led increased This increase was significant but moderate stands. With composition, many cases. We conclude guidelines, can be an additional measure promote phytodiversity agricultural landscapes they contain relatively high (of mainly common adaptable species) support distinct differ habitats. such or sectional harvesting could offered agri-environmental schemes further sustainability production SRC.

Successional changes of phytodiversity on a short rotation coppice plantation in Oberschwaben, Germany

To allow for information on successional changes in phytodiversity over time and space, as well as information on differences between clones and treatments, phytodiversity was monitored on a poplar short rotation coppice plantation in Oberschwaben, Southwest Germany, in four consecutive years. The investigated plantation was divided into two core areas, one planted with poplar clone Max4, the o...

Can we use short rotation coppice poplar for sugar based biorefinery feedstock? Bioconversion of 2-year-old poplar grown as short rotation coppice

BACKGROUND Feedstock cost is a substantial barrier to the commercialization of lignocellulosic biorefineries. Poplar grown using a short rotation coppice (SRC) system has the potential to provide a low-cost feedstock and economically viable sugar yields for fuels and chemicals production. In the coppice management regime, poplars are harvested after 2 years' growth to develop the root system an...

Potential benefits of commercial willow Short Rotation Coppice (SRC) for farm-scale plant and invertebrate communities in the agri-environment

The cultivation of bioenergy crops (BECs) represents a significant land-use change in agrienvironments, but their deployment has raised important issues globally regarding possible impacts on biodiversity. Few studies however, have systematically examined the effect of commercial scale bioenergy plantations on biodiversity in agri-ecosystems. In this study we investigate how the abundance and d...

Evaluating ecosystem processes in willow short rotation coppice bioenergy plantations

Despite a growing body of research linking bioenergy cultivation to changing patterns of biodiversity, there has been remarkably little interest in how bioenergy plantations affect key ecosystem processes underpinning important ecosystem services. In this study, we compare how the processes of predation by ground arthropods and litter decomposition varied between Short Rotation Coppice (SRC) wi...
